The Dodo table lamp stems from a fascination with mirror mazes and optical distortions that transform familiar shapes into unexpected forms. Its silhouette resembles a stylised head whose proportions appear warped, as if reflected in a curved mirror. The surface of the lamp is metallised to create a mirror-like effect, continuously transforming both the surrounding space and the object itself through reflections. In place of eyes, a pair of light bulbs glow, giving the lamp a subtly surreal expression. The name refers to the dodo – a creature whose peculiar appearance inspired the playful exaggeration of the design. Dodo thus functions as a luminous object that connects illusion, humour, and experimentation with form.

Jakub Berdych
Karpelis

Multidisciplinary designer and sculptor and co-founder of one of the best-known independent Czech design studios, Qubus Design Studio (2002), which simultaneously opened its showroom as the first Czech design shop and started the so-called new wave of Czech design under its own Qubus brand by producing its own collections.

In parallel, Jakub devotes himself primarily to his conceptual work with traditional materials such as glass, stone and porcelain. He is the author of a number of collections and products that have been offered by Moss Gallery New York or Mint Gallery London. His works are characterized by the permeation of applied and free art, and in 2018 he presented his free work at his first solo exhibition. His works on the border between art and design are represented in a number of museum and private collections.

Since 2008, he has been the artistic director of the largest Czech gallery design shop DOX by Qubus in the DOX Contemporary Art Center in Prague. Since the end of 2025, he has been working as the creative director of ARTGLASS.
